Gerardo Guevara, Ecuador
Born in Quito on September 23, 1930. Composer, pianist, conductor and choir director. Begun his musical studies at the Quito National Conservatory of Music. In 1950 won the First Prize in the National Conservatory of Music 50 Aniversary Composition Competition. He was director of the Guayaquil National Conservatory of Music Choir. In 1958 the premiered his Ballet "Yaguar shungo" for symphony orchestra, choir. He is the only Ecuadorian composer to receive a scholarship from the UNESCO to study with famous composer Nadia Boulanger at the Paris School of Music, Mrs. Boulanger was the teacher of the most famous XX century composer like Copland, Bernstein, etc. In 1980 he was appointed director of the Quito National Conservatory of Music. He is the founder and Director of the Quito Central University Choir. He is consider Ecuador’s most outstanding composer.
